Here at the Turquoise Collection we have put together a list of frequently asked questions about Kalkan and the surrounding area to help you make the most of your holiday in Kalkan.
1.) Where is Kalkan situated?
Kalkan is located on the Southern Mediterranean Coast, known as the Turquoise Coast. Kalkan is 87km to the West of Fethiye and 27km to the East of Kas, situated at the foot of the Taurus Mountains.
2.) What is the climate like in Kalkan?
Kalkan is one of the most southerly points of Turkeys Mediterranean coast. Temperatures start to rise from early April (around mid 20s), usually reaching the low 30’s in June. July and August are the hottest months with temperatures reaching the high 30s, and sometimes the low 40’s.
From November until April the temperatures are milder, but still with some winter sunshine.
Some people may find the heat during the hottest months too intense and may find the slightly cooler months of spring and autumn more preferable. Temperatures in Kalkan during the months of April, May and October will be more bearable.

The main beach in Kalkan is a pebbly beach next to the harbour. The waters around Kalkan have a Blue Flag Award for cleanliness. Sunbeds and umbrellas can be hired for around 3TL a day. |

A 10 minute drive from Kalkan is Kaputas beach. This beach is a sandy cove at the foot of a mountain gorge. This beautiful beach is used in many travel brochures for Turkey.
Kaputas beach can be accessed easily from Kalkan with frequent Dolmus (shared minibuses) going to and from the beach.

A 20 minutes bus ride from Kalkan is Patara beach. Patara beach is Turkey's longest and widest beach. It is a completely undeveloped 12km stretch of sandy beach voted one of the best in the world by Times Online in 2005. |
5.) Are there watersports in Kalkan?
There are many watersports to take part in around the bay such as jet skiing, water skiing, parasailing and banana boat rides. The watersports can be accessed from the beach clubs situated around Kalkan bay.
6.) Are there diving facilities?
Kalkan’s crystal clear waters are a top location for diving along Turkey's coast. There are several islands and reefs with a huge variety of marine life including turtles, nurse sharks, dolphins and barracudas. Kalkan dive centre can be contacted at www.kalkandiving.com.
7.) What is the nightlife like in Kalkan?
Kalkan’s Old Town comes alive at night with the buzz of many cafes, restaurants and bars. There are no nightclubs but a number of music bars and dancing bars in the Old Town and on the harbour front which usually stay open until the last customer of the evening leaves. The music bars are small and intimate playing a wide mix of music to cater for all tastes and ages and some have small dance floors.
Noise is restricted and bar owners have to observe strict rules or will face fines.
8.) What are the restaurants like in Kalkan?
Kalkan is said to have the highest number of restaurants per square metre on the Turkish coast and a good selection of bars to suit all tastes. Kalkan is particularly renowned for roof top dining, with many restaurants and cafes having large roof terraces where you can enjoy your meal while watching the sunset.
You will be spoilt for choice while in Kalkan, however it may be worth trying:
AUBERGINE- A unique dining experience in the heart of Kalkan directly on the harbour front. Aubergine offers a large variety of freshly caught fish and seafood, meat, poultry and vegetable dishes all made only using the finest quality of local produce.
BELGINS KITCHEN- Seating is provided in the form of cushions strewn on the floor and low tables, which adds to the relaxed atmosphere. The menu is mainly traditional Turkish dishes, cooked with fresh ingredients.
KORSAN RESTAURANT- Located next to the harbour on the beach front. Korsan’s offers the most amazing views from its roof top terrace. The menu consists of traditional Turkish and contemporary cuisine.
9.) Would you recommend hiring a car in Kalkan?
There are many places of interest, situated around Kalkan. Having a car can open up Kalkan and help you to make the most of your holiday. However it is not essential that you have a car during your stay as there are plenty of places to visit within walking distance, and public transport is available. Car hire rates can be viewed here.
10.) How do I drive in Turkey?
Driving in Turkey is on the right-hand side as in continental Europe and all visitors may drive with an international driving licence. You should have a copy of your licence, together with your passport and insurance documents, with you in the car at all times. The speed limit is 50km (30 miles) per hour in built up areas and rises to 90km (56 miles) per hour on motorways and open roads. Speeding drivers will be fined on the spot.
11.) How efficient is public transport in Kalkan?
The local Dolmus (shared minibuses) is the most cost effective way to get around in Kalkan. They go to places such as Kas, Patara, Kapatus beach and Xanthos. The main bus stop is about 10 minutes out of the centre of Kalkan, past the market on the right hand side. Taxis are also widely available, they run from early in the morning to late at night in peak season.
12.) What is the cheapest way to call back to the UK from Kalkan?
The cheapest way to call the UK whilst in Kalkan is by using a phone card. Phone cards can be purchased at the post office located at the top of the main street in Kalkan. The Post Office's normal opening hours are 09:00 to 18:30 (closed between 12:30 – 13.30 for lunch) however, the times are extended during August from 09:00 to 12pm.. You are able to use the public telephones at the post office which are in air-conditioned rooms at the same rate as a standard telephone box.
The call boxes require a card that is made up of units of 30, 60 or 100. To call the UK , dial 00 44 omit the 0 from the STD code and continue with the rest of the code and number. The best rates are between 22.00 – 08.00 and all day Sunday (during which time there is a 25% discount on normal rates). Public telephones have three buttons on the right hand side, the bottom one of which changes the instructions into other languages.
13.) What is the time difference between the UK and Kalkan?
Turkey is GMT+2, that is to say two hours ahead of the UK. What are the opening times for shops and other services? During the summer season, and in the main cities and resorts, many shops are open seven days a week and stay open until late.
14.) What is the mains voltage supply and will I need to bring an adapter?
Wall sockets in Turkey take two-pin plugs as the mains voltage for electricity is 220V and 50Hz. You will need an adaptor if your appliances use three-pin plugs. These are usually easily purchased at all the major airports in the UK.
