Turkey Currency Information
The new Turkish Lira is the official currency of Turkey and the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. Equivalent to 100,000 of the old Turkish Lira, the new Lira was introduced after extreme inflation, which lasted a period of many years from the 1970’s until the 1990’s.
In 2005, the Turkish Government passed a law which then removed the last six zeros from the old currency, and this gave way to the new Turkish Lira, in addition to two new banknotes called TRY 100 and TRY 50. During this transitional period of the new Turkish Lira between 1 January 2005 and 31 December 2008, the second Lira was officially called Yeni Turk Liras and abbreviated to just YTL. From 1 January 2009, the reference to the Lira being a 'new' form of currency was also removed, changing this abbreviation to just TL.
Currency for your Kalkan holiday

    After booking your Kalkan holiday it is advisable to take enough Turkish Lira with you to get you through the first day or two and then change the rest of your foreign currency in Kalkan as the local exchange rates are often much better. Travellers cheques are not widely accepted in Turkey, and it best not to exchange any currency at airports as the rate of exchange is usually very poor.

    There are a variety of places in Kalkan where you can exchange your money into Turkish Lira:

    Banks: Normal opening hours are 09:00 -17:00 weekdays.

    All banks named below are situated in the same main road which goes uphill from the town above the 2 roundabouts;

      • Yapi Kredi Bank
      • Is Bank
      • Deniz Bank
      • Garanti Bank
      • Ak Bank

    These banks all have cash machines with instructions in English which accept Maestro, Mastercard, Visa, Cirrus and current account debit cards, a commission is normally charged by your bank. Cash can also be exchanged inside the banks.

    Post Office: Open 09:00 - 18:30. Closed for lunch between 12:30 - 13:30

    During high season opening times are extended from 09:00- midnight.

    The Post Office (PTT) is situated downhill from the lower of Kalkan's two roundabouts, on the left hand side. You can exchange your currency here as well as send post, purchase telephone cards and make telephone calls. Metered telephone calls can be made at the post office in air-conditioned rooms and are charged at the same rate as a standard telephone box.

    Shops

    When the PTT and banks are closed you will be able to exchange cash at one of the smaller shops in the old town, which display their rates on a board outside. They tend to open very long hours until after midnight, and 7 days a week during the season (May to October).
