Traditional Turkish dishes
Food will surely be high on your holiday agenda as there are so many mouthwatering eateries to choose from and Kalkan is justifiably proud of its cuisine. Not only will you be assailed by the choice of fabulous restaurants with their cocktail bars but you will quickly realise that eating out is the highlight of every holidaymaker’s day. As the sky darkens delicious aromas start to permeate the streets and people start to head for town to join the irresistible bustle of Kalkan’s nightlife. Ingredients used in the restaurants will always be fresh as Turkey grows all its own produce. Here are some typical Turkish dishes to look out for:

Meze
Try a selection of Meze on your holiday in Turkey
 
A selection of starters which can be served on a large platter for sharing or ordered individually. You might be offered stuffed vine leaves, mint and yoghurt dip, courgette fritters, deep fried cheese pastries, baked stuffed aubergines (Imam Bayildi), broad bean pate and a selection of delicious salads.

A flatbread similar to pizza with various toppings. Look out for Lahmacun which is a classic version with a meat topping.

The most famous of all Turkish foods comes in different forms, not always as you imagine! It can be served as kofte which are meatballs or chunks of meat grilled on a skewer and finally;- a sliced doner kebap.

 
Desserts

Baklava
 
There are various oven-baked Turkish pastries which come under the heading of "baklava." They consist of Fine layers of filo pastry brushed with butter, then folded, stacked or rolled after being interleaved with crushed pistachios or hazelnuts. They're baked in the oven, then soaked in syrup. Baklava is best if you wait several days before eating it and is definitely more delicious when eaten in Turkey!

Halva
 
Served with coffee or tea, halva is the perfect ending to any meal. It is made from tahini (sesame seed paste), combined with sugar, and shaped into blocks. There are many additions and variations, such as halva with pistachios, halva with chocolate, halva with hazelnuts, and more. Delicious served either slightly warm or cold.
 
Turkish Rice Pudding (Sutlac)
 
This is usually baked in the oven and served cold.
