Santorini Travel Guide: beaches

Santorini beaches to discover

Santorini's coastline is as distinctive as its caldera views: black-sand bays, dramatic rock formations and quieter stretches that feel a world away from the island's busiest towns. Here are a few beaches worth knowing for swimming, sunbathing and a different perspective on the island.

Exo Gialos Beach, Santorini

Exo Gialos Beach

Exo Gialos is a quiet sandy-and-pebbly beach around 4 km from Fira, on the island's east side, known for its striking rock formations. It's considered the town beach of Fira, with a beautiful contrast between the blue sea and the black sand.

A small fishing-boat port sits nearby, and parts of the beach are organised with umbrellas (around €3 per person). You'll also find a canteen for snacks and refreshments, plus a taverna for lunch.

Kamari Beach, Santorini

Kamari Beach

Kamari is a well-known beach resort around 10 km south-east of Fira. Like neighbouring Perissa, it's characterised by black sand, and backed by the imposing Mesa Vouno rock rising directly from the sea.

The beach is fully organised with sunbeds, umbrellas and a wide range of watersports. In the evening, the landscape is particularly atmospheric as the rock looms in the dark.

Traditional houses line the village, and the waterfront promenade is ideal for a gentle stroll.

Perissa Beach, Santorini

Perissa Beach

Perissa is a beautiful beach around 15 km south-east of Fira, stretching for approximately 7 km along the south-eastern coast. It's known for its black sand, clear water and strong range of beach facilities.

Mesa Vouno dominates the backdrop here too, and the view is particularly striking at night when the rock stands out against the darkness.

The village offers a wide variety of restaurants, tavernas, cafés and bars - developed and inviting, yet still with a traditional character.

Monolithos Beach, Santorini

Monolithos Beach

Close to Kamari and near the airport, Monolithos is popular with locals and especially families. It's long, with black sand and shallow waters, and sunbeds and umbrellas are available.

The atmosphere is relaxed and welcoming, with hotels and other accommodation nearby, plus restaurants and cafés.

There's a football pitch, a basketball court and a children's play area, while trees at the back of the beach offer shade for those who want it.

Vlychada Beach and Theros Beach Bar, Santorini

Vlychada Beach

Vlychada is a serene, pebbly beach with a distinctive landscape, around a 10-minute drive from Perivolos and well worth a visit. It's often considered one of the most beautiful and best organised beaches on the island.

From Fira, take the road towards Akrotiri and follow signs to Vlychada. There are no buses, which helps keep crowds down - ideal for those who prefer a quieter beach day focused on swimming and sunbathing. No watersports are available here.

Theros Beach Bar offers cocktails, relaxed music, and sunbeds and parasols for hire.
