Croatia Holidays: Makarska Riviera

Discover the Makarska Riviera on Croatia's coast

The Makarska Riviera is one of the most scenic stretches of the Adriatic coast, known for long pebble beaches, clear water and the dramatic backdrop of Mount Biokovo. Set between Split and Dubrovnik, it's a popular choice for Croatia holidays with a classic seaside feel, and is straightforward to reach from Split Airport in around 1 hour 15 minutes by road.

At the heart of the region is Makarska itself, built around a sheltered bay with a lively harbour and a palm-lined promenade. The old town sits just behind the waterfront, centred on Kačić Square, where summer evenings often bring local events and open-air performances. Wander the stone-paved lanes for cafés and gelato stops, visit the Franciscan Monastery with its small museum and gallery, or head to the Astronomical Observatory for views of the night sky.

Along the promenade, you'll find stylish bars and restaurants overlooking the harbour, with boat trips and day cruises available to nearby islands including Hvar and Brač. Makarska's main beach is well set up for families, with water sports and plenty of places to pause in the shade between swim stops.

Beyond the town, the coastline continues with smaller resorts and quieter bases. Baška Voda, around 9km to the north, is known for its Blue Flag beach and easy access to the foothills, while Tučepi to the south has one of the longest beaches on the Riviera, backed by pine trees and the mountains beyond.

For a change of pace from the sea, Mount Biokovo offers well-marked walking routes, panoramic viewpoints and the wild landscapes of Biokovo Nature Park. With pine forests, olive groves and Mediterranean greenery across the lower slopes, Makarska Riviera holidays work beautifully for guests who want beach days, coastal exploring and time outdoors in equal measure.
