An overview of Kalkan, Turkey

Kalkan is set in one of Europe's most striking Mediterranean bays, framed by the majestic Taurus Mountains and a deep, turquoise sea. Once a modest coastal trading port, it is now a thriving yet unspoilt holiday town centred around its exquisite harbour, filled with traditional wooden gulets and small fishing craft which sits beside the town beach and waterfront restaurants. The historic Old Town rises in a maze of cobbled streets, whitewashed houses and bougainvillea-draped balconies; by day, it is a charming place to wander between boutiques and cafés, while after dusk its acclaimed dining scene comes alive, as the tantalising aromas of Kalkan's renowned cuisine entice people onto rooftop terraces and harbourfront tables for atmostpheric, unhurried evenings.

From the harbour, small boats ferry guests to beach clubs dotted around the bay, and gulets offer leisurely trips to nearby beaches, islands and inlets, with watersports, diving and fishing also available.

A glimpse into Kalkan's rich history

Originally known as "Kalamaki", Kalkan grew into an important 19th-century port. Its position between Kaş and Fethiye made it a natural trading hub, settled 150-200 years ago by people of Greek and Turkish origin. Goods arrived by camel from the Xanthos valley and the highlands before being shipped across the eastern Mediterranean.

By the early 20th century, Kalkan had its own customs house and a lively community of restaurants and artisans. Following World War I, the population exchange between Turkey and Greece led many Greek residents to depart, and improved road networks in the 1950s saw sea trade decline. Tourism revived the town in the 1960s, sparked by visiting English yachtsmen.

Today, the Old Town's architecture reflects this layered heritage - whitewashed and stone houses, shuttered windows, carved balconies and narrow lanes that still hold a sense of the past. Nearby, the ancient Lycian sites of Xanthos (UNESCO), Patara, Tlos and Myra add cultural depth to any stay, offering a striking contrast to days spent by the water.
